Learning Dutch

These Schools teach Dutch in the UK to ages 4 to 18. Few -if any- cater to beginning ‘Dutch as a foreign language’ students. Please make sure that the course is suitable for your needs and ability! More about the study of Dutch can be found on www.anglo-dutch.org.uk in the ‘Study Dutch’ section, which also lists some teach yourself material.

First, a general link for Dutch people with children of school age who are moving abroad. NOB : Stichting Nederlands Onderwijs in het Buitenland have a section aimed at parents, at www.stichtingnob.nl.  You are advised to look at the NOB site for details, as updates from schools only occasionally reach the web-editor; it would be appreciated – given the number of page views – if visitors could let the editor know of any schools which are missing, or alert to outdated information via web14 ‘at’ dutch.org.uk .

NTC-school stands for Nederlandse Taal en Cultuur : Dutch Language and Culture.

European Baccalaureate: a European Society overseeing secondary school exams, to ensure and guarantee that those who graduated can merge seamlessly into other country schools and universities; please refer to www.eursc.org for more complete information.

a Dutch ‘NTC-PO’ school in Sevenoaks, Kent, provides lessons in the Dutch language to children aged 4 to 12 years, living in Kent, London and Surrey. Dutch teaching materials are used. The initiative is subsidised by the Netherlands government, who inspect on an annual basis.

University College London : Dutch Online Courses

Since 2009 University College London (UCL) offers online Dutch language courses which are fully distance taught. The course offer has been largely expanded in 2012 and now includes two language courses for beginners, two for intermediate and one for advanced learners. For those with an interest in specialized forms of Dutch, UCL also offers online reading courses in Early Modern Dutch and Business Dutch.     I am missing Southbank International School on the list of schools that offer Dutch as a subject.
    They are based in central London and offer Dutch as well; both for primary school and secondary school (MYP and Baccalaureate-language, linguistics and literature).

  2. Please be aware that there is another Dutch NTC primary school in Cambridge, called De Vaarboom. De Vaarboom provides Dutch education at Primary school level and aims to ensure that Dutch children do not fall behind in learning their native tongue.
